MARY ELLEN GIBSON
I first discovered Pilates in my early 20’s while completing my undergraduate studies at Appalachian State and immediately became hooked due to the overwhelming sense of peace I experienced within. As someone who has always seemed to have many ‘irons in the fire’ I was searching for something to calm my mind and anchor me. Pilates helped center my mind, body and spirit and seemed to ground me like no other exercise or activity could do. I have remained faithful to the practice of Pilates for over a decade now, and am convinced that this method kept me balanced during my graduate work while studying to become an Occupational Therapist. As a health care professional, I strongly believe that fitness and well being go hand in hand. I was so grateful to continue a modified practice throughout my first pregnancy, and when physically prepared, quickly sought out to return for post-natal work following the birth of my daughter earlier this year.
I have always felt led and experienced a strong desire to complete a Pilates certification, but life always seemed to get ‘too busy’ and I continued to put it on the back burner. Following the birth of my daughter, during a moment of internal exploration, I realized that I did not want to have to explain to her one day that I had simply never pursued something I had always longed to do. So, I immediately started researching and contacting local Pilates enthusiasts to inquire of the first Pilates Certification Course I could find. Then I signed up! With the amazing mentorship of Kim and all the girls at Mindful Body, I have completed my Mat Certification through ‘In Balance Pilates’ in Wilmington, NC and will begin the full apparatus training later this year to become certified in May 2014.
My daughter has inspired me to follow my dream, not make excuses and listen to that still small voice that has always led me to teach this amazing method, which has truly changed my life. I look forward to sharing the Pilates Method with you and watch as your quality of life increases with greater quality of mind, body and spirit. ~ Live Well ~
I first fell in love with Pilates in high school where I practiced mat work. I loved that in such a short amount of time I could challenge myself in so many ways and change my body for the better. I continued my practice off and on through college and when I graduated from the University of South Carolina, I decided to further my Pilates education. I completed the Core Essentials Comprehensive Classical Program in 2011 and have been teaching and learning ever since. I love all the opportunities that Pilates has afforded me and I love being able to share that love with others!
I fell into PIlates, but certainly not by mistake. I played volleyball and basketball during high school, but organized sports and exercise were not a priority in College. I always did “something,” but there were no exercise modalities which I enjoyed in my mind and body, until I tried Pilates.
I went to my first mat Pilates class while I was living in South Florida.
I immediately felt longer, leaner and more connected to my body. I was hooked! As I continued my personal practice, my instructor encouraged me to become certified. I was certified through Power Pilates in 2007 and have taken continuing education to deepen my practice.
Pilates helped me to stay healthy during and after pregnancy. I am now more connected to my body than ever before. I enjoy working with clients on a daily basis and hope to share the genius of Joseph Pilates’ contrology work with each of my clients.
A physical therapist since 1990 and always physically active, I began taking private Pilates lessons five years ago. During my times in the studio, I realized that many clients have orthopedic concerns. The idea of combining my love of physical fitness, strengthening and wellness in a relaxed and fun environment is what inspired me to become a Pilates instructor. Helping others overcome physical challenges and observing their positive body/life transformation is extremely rewarding.Becoming a Pilates instructor has been a great addition to my life and my career.

Maryellen Hogan Gibson began her practice of Pilates in 1996. After 15 years of teaching The Firm Aerobic Weight Training Method, and with a very cranky spine, she craved the length, strength and release the Pilates Method offered and became passionate about the work. Being an exercise enthusiast, she continued teaching The Firm for 10 more years while studying Pilates and Yoga. She completed her first Pilates certification with Colleen Glenn and Karen Sanzo, of Goodbody’s Pilates in 2002. She went on to study further at The Pilates Center, in Boulder, Colorado, receiving a Masters Training Certificate in 2009. She regularly continues to pursue her Pilates education with a variety of wonderful teachers and is excited about the idea of further training in both rehabilitative and classical Pilates, after finding much relief from her own back injury. She is a grateful and humbled student of yoga, and received her 200 hour training from Holy Cow Yoga Center in Charleston SC. Maryellen, the forever student, graduated from the College of Charleston and The Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing. She practiced as a Registered Nurse in Pediatric Nursing at MUSC.
Feeling stronger than ever, Maryellen works to help her students develop a deeper sense of awareness of both their physical and mental potential in a safe and challenging manner. It gives her immense gratification to watch her students regain strength, range of motion, and the ability to “Return To Life”. She is honored and delighted to be a part of the Mindful Body Community.
Courtney first came to Pilates over a decade ago after many failed attempts at finding strength, peace and appreciation for her body. Pilates awakened in her a newfound respect for the capabilities of the human body and showed her that physical and mental vitality are not mutually exclusive. The hard work, gratification and humble pride that came with a growing Pilates practice led Courtney on a new search of learning how to incorporate Pilates principles into everyday life and share it with others.
After completing a Power Pilates Mat Certification in 2006, she was hooked on teaching and continued on to complete a Comprehensive Power Pilates Certification in 2008 and a Balanced Body Bridge Certification in 2009. Courtney has worked with clients from all walks of life, from the beginner to the advanced, from fellow teachers to those with special needs, she welcomes anyone and encourages everyone to discover what Pilates can do for them.
Pilates opened the door to what Courtney hopes will be a lifetime of teaching and learning. She has also found a love in the group fitness arena and teaches barre fitness, BUTI fitness and many other types of fusion fitness classes. Courtney aims to please and strives to make every class or session one that is challenging, inspiring and proof that you can have fun while working out!
I was born and raised in Helena Montana and have always been a very active person, partly due to life in "Big Sky Country." In addition to many outdoor activities I have also been a competitive equestrian rider for most of my life, starting very young, I have shown multiple breeds in multiple disciplines. I often suffered from low back pain, shoulder pain, and severe tightness in my back and hamstrings due to the physical demands of riding.
After graduation from Virginia Commonwealth University I went to work for a very large pharmaceutical company. The long hours driving exacerbated my back pain and tightness. I discovered the Pilates method as possible relief for the constant pain and to strengthen and tone as well as improve my flexibility. The rest is history! Three children and many years later I love Pilates so much I became an instructor in hopes of sharing pilates with others. I believe Pilates is so amazing because it is truly for any body at any level of fitness and with any fitness goal. I am so excited to meet new people and be a part of their healthful journey and share Pilates with them. I also feel very blessed and fortunate to be joining The Mindful Body family!
Colleen took her first Pilates mat class after the birth of her second son, in 2004. She immediately fell in love with the Pilates method, earned her certification and began teaching in New York in 2005. Colleen has a passion for teaching and helping share the many benefits of Pilates; body awareness, working from your center, having a long and supple spine. She enjoys improving her own Pilates practice and taking continued education classes, to learn more everyday.
She has taught many different populations; from teens to trained athletes and loves to emphasize the Pilates principles in all her classes. Colleen's hands on approach and insight in understanding movement patterns inspires her clients to be more connected to their bodies and in control of their own health and well being.
Athletic at the earliest possible stage of my life and now serving as a senior Pilates instructor at Mindful Body, I am grateful for being able to maintain my own flexibility of movement and for the opportunity to guide, share and instruct others in the enormous benefits Pilates can bestow upon the human body.
Passionate about competitive Dragon Boat racing in Charleston but injured and slowing down, Pilates found me seven years ago and allowed me to bring home ribbons from all over the world. Inspired by the benefits as to me personally I reached out to get my own teaching certificate and I am more than glad to be on board with a great team in this studio helping others achieve their goals.
Pilates came naturally into my life over 10 years ago after searching for many different methods of healing for longtime issues with my lower back. As young girl with a background in gymnatsics and competitive horseback riding,
I was always engaged in a very active lifestyle. Then as a young adult after my first child was born and pregnant with my second, my life and body was very different and lower back was still cranky. Then I found or should I say "Pilates found me!" After completing Karen Sanzo's full mat and apparatus certification on 2004 is when my journey began in my own healing and the healing I am now so pleased to share.
My passion for movement and healing has now lead me to dive naturally into GYROTONIC and GYROKINESIS methods. Becoming fully certified in 2012 in GYROTONIC, Jumping Stretch Board, Musical Journey and GYROKINESIS in 2014 under the amazing guidance of Master trainer Miriam Barbosa.
The Mindful Body Pilates studio is now with eight years old and thriving, due to the array of amazing equally talented teachers, dedicated students and expansive methods of movement we are all so honored and grateful for......we look forward to moving and breathing with you in this moment.
Wade Middleton is a life long athlete, world traveler and health enthusiast who teaches Pilates with unrestrained joyfulness and spontaneity. His resume reads like a choose your own adventure book from teaching Yoga in Thailand, working SCUBA boats in Belize, animating in Los Angeles, and working on staff at a Sivananda Ashram in the Sierra Nevada mountains. While working at the ashram for two years, Wade was taught a classical style of yoga which focuses on meditation through practicing Juana Yoga (the study of scripture) Bhakti Yoga (devotion) Karma Yoga (selfless service) and Raja Yoga (control of and silencing of the mind). Asana, the physical training of Yoga, was practiced for 2 hours every day at the ashram. The change in his mind and body were profound, and led Wade to a new appreciation and fascination of the mind/body connection. While taking his tiny steps toward enlightenment in the mountains, Wade met a pilates teacher from Los Angeles who taught him a few core strengthening exercises that helped improve his asana practice. After leaving the ashram, he moved to Washington DC to teach Yoga and found himself taking pilates mat classes whenever he could. This led to Balanced Body teacher training, and a 2 year pilates internship. Pilates training requires an understanding of the body's mechanics to not only strengthen muscle, but to restore a pain free range of motion. After testing out with Balanced Body, he moved to Charleston SC to do what he loves most, teach Pilates and Yoga. In his spare time Wade continues to practice what he teaches, plays in the water, and writes about himself in the third person.
Physical fitness has always been an important part of my life. I searched for years for a workout where I could feel and see a positive change in my body and I finally found it through pilates. I fell in love and was immediately hooked after my first lesson. I was certified to teach the traditional pilates method in 2006 through In Balance Pilates. It is like no other excercise in that it works the body form the inside out. I truly believe it is a major key in keeping our bodies young.
As Joseph Pilates said, "A man's body is only as young as his spine". I fell in love with the pilates technique and hope to make others feel the same!!
